Transfers maintain highway fund into 2016: DOT

OREANDA-NEWS. September 09, 2015. Stopgap transfers will fund interstate highway projects into June 2016, the US Department of Transportation said today.

But many of the programs funded by the Highway Trust Fund will lose their authorization in late October, complicating reimbursements to states and preventing new highway and transit projects, the agency said.

Congress has struggled to keep solvent a fund intended to provide stability to highway infrastructure funding. Reluctant to update the trust's main revenue stream — fuel taxes that have gone untouched for more than 20 years — Congress instead transferred \\$8bn for short-term funding in July and has considered selling oil from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
