Arch Cancer Care encourages runners to participate in ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk
“Last year during our inaugural run/walk, participants raised more than \\$60,000 for prostate cancer research, education and advocacy,” said Heather Eissler, medical assistant with Arch Cancer Care and race director for the St. Louis region. “We are asking the community to help us exceed that goal this year so that more lives can be saved from prostate cancer in the future.”
This year, 3,900 men from Missouri are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Imagine the impact to families and loved ones if these men were all detected early, vastly improving their odds of survival.
“It’s exciting that half of the funds raised will stay right here in our community to help our patients, and the other half is invested in national research as well as patient testing and educational programs,” said Eissler. “This is important because, other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American men. In fact, one out of seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. We are working hard to change this through prevention, screening, education and state-of-the-art treatment.”
The run/walk will include a 5K and 10K race as well as a Kids Superhero Dash for Dad. This year, the race will also feature a performance by ZERO spokesman, Nashville recording artist and former American Idol contestant Jimmy Charles, who will be in attendance to perform his new song “Superman,” an anthem dedicated to cancer patients and survivors.
Additionally, ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer and Arch Cancer Care-St. Louis Urological Surgeons hosted a prostate cancer awareness day at the St. Louis Cardinals game on July 24. Five hundred tickets were sold, and all proceeds went to ZERO Prostate Cancer.
About Arch Cancer Care-St. Louis Urological Surgeons
St. Louis Urological Surgeons was founded in 1935 with the goal of delivering high-quality urological care to the St. Louis area. Today the tradition of excellence continues. The practice now includes 13 physicians providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary urological care from six convenient locations. In 2009, the practice partnered with Arch Cancer Care to create a unique centralized facility that specializes in the multidisciplinary management of prostate cancer.
Physicians are highly-trained, board-certified urologic surgeons and radiation oncology specialists who are graduates of some of the most prestigious educational centers in the country. They participate in extensive continuing medical education and have been consistent leaders in the introduction of innovative treatments to the local community. The practice is committed to providing the latest urological procedures and treatments and has invested in state-of-the-art radiation and robotic technologies.
Patients receive treatment in convenient, comfortable community-based facilities close to home. Treatment locations are easy to find with close parking and offices that are patient-friendly with minimal walking required, unlike some large hospitals which can be difficult for patients to navigate. Appointments and treatments are completed efficiently, with the patient’s schedule always in mind. Additionally, treatment is usually more cost-effective than in a hospital setting.
