OREANDA-NEWS. August 25, 2015. Road safety is a major concern in India: The country represents 11% of all traffic injuries worldwide. This is why the World Bank, IFC and AXA are launching a partnership initiative named the Kerala Road Safety Hackathon in association with the Kerala Road Safety Authority and Department of Information Technology and supported by AngelHack and GTech to improve road safety in Kerala. This Indian state is suffering around 40,000 accidents per year, with thousands of fatalities.

The hackathon, held from August 22 to 23, brings together over 120 developers from all over India to design in 24 hours applications that provide practical solutions to improve road safety, in one of the following areas: engineering, enforcement, education and emergency care management.

For instance, it could be solutions that implement technology into existing infrastructure (roads, signals, etc.) or that accelerate emergency response such as an automatic alert system that notifies Police, Paramedics, or Fire Department.

All the solutions developed by the hackathon will be passed on to the public free of charge.
