OREANDA-NEWS. August 12, 2015. In December 2013 the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Mexican United States entered into the Agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy. In conformity with the Note sent by the Embassy of the Mexican United States to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Agreement came into force on 18 July 2015.

This document constitutes a legal basis for cooperation in the field of nuclear power engineering between these countries in a wide range of directions, including: fundamental and applied research in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy; design, construction, operation, life extension, decommissioning and training of experts in the field of operation of power and research nuclear reactors; rendering and development of nuclear fuel cycle services, namely delivery of nuclear fuel for research nuclear reactors and power nuclear reactors, radioactive waste management; development, design and manufacture of materials and components for power nuclear reactors and research nuclear reactors; maintenance of nuclear and radiation safety, radiation protection, emergency response; regulation of nuclear and radiation safety as well as radiation protection, supervision over physical protection of nuclear plant, radiation sources, storage premises, nuclear materials and radioactive substances; manufacture and application of radioisotopes in industries, medicine and agriculture; training of experts in the field of nuclear physics and nuclear power engineering, etc.

The Agreement involves creation of a joint coordination committee for development of particular directions of cooperation, control over execution of the Agreement and further consultations on the matters connected with peaceful use of atomic energy. The Parties agreed to execute the Agreement by means of creation of joint working groups for implementation of specific projects and scientific research, exchange of experts, organization of workshops and symposiums, assistance in training of scientific and technical staff, exchange of scientific and technical information.
