OREANDA-NEWS. July 29, 2015. The Ministry of Information Technology and Communications specifies that the old type driving licences approved in 1995 remain valid and can be freely used on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. For international traffic it is recommended to change the old type driving licences with the new type approved in 2008, which have a validity period and meet all international standards. In compliance with the Directive 2006/126/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on driving licences this document has a validity period, while the old type driving licence doesn’t include this term.

The MITC informs that the recommendation to change the old type driving licence is a consequence of inquiries made by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova that were transmitted directly and through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. According to the data of the MFAEI and the SE “Registru”, complaints about the difficulties in using the old type driving licences were registered in Italy, where Moldovan citizens were fined under the host state legislation. To prevent these situations, the MITC reiterates the recommendation to use the new type driving licence, model of 2008, in case of international traffic.

To change the driving license, citizens may contact any local office with competence for vehicles registration and driver's qualification. The procedure is simplified and doesn’t require a repeated driving examination. The person is expected to confirm its medical fitness to drive vehicles of the requested category.
