OREANDA-NEWS. July 14, 2015. Huawei today announced it is a key contributor to the European 5G Public Private Partnership (5GPPP) initiative and is working on five co-funded projects. The 5GPPP is strengthening the 5G research and global cooperation in Europe, to build a robust 5G infrastructure by 2020.

The 5G PPP has been initiated by the EU Commission and industry manufacturers, telecommunications operators, service providers, SMEs and researchers. The initiative will deliver solutions, architectures, technologies and standards for the ubiquitous next generation communication infrastructures of the coming decade, providing 1000 times higher wireless area capacity and energy savings of up to 90% per service provide compared to services in 2010, creating a secure, reliable and dependable internet with ‘zero perceived’ downtime.

The first phase of the 5GPPP was launched on July 1, 2015. In total, the 5G PPP initiative is expected to generate €3.5billion from private investment, and €700 million in EU funding.

Huawei has been at the forefront of this collaborative effort since the beginning, initially as a Board Member of the 5G Infrastructure Association, and recently contributing to 5G PPP with its expertise and global resources.

“5G is the standard that will transition Europe into an era of ‘smart everything’. The 5G PPP initiative will create vast business opportunities in a number of areas and secure Europe’s leadership in 5G,” said Dr. Wen Tong, Wireless Chief Technology Officer, Huawei.

“Huawei continues to invest in 5G technology research. Our collaboration with European industry and research partners is at the very heart of this commitment. We are delighted to work with European partners, and build alliances to bring us closer to transforming our vision of 5G into a reality,” added Tong.

A total of 19 projects have been selected to address the research challenges which will lead to a 5G infrastructure by 2020. The majority of the projects focus on radio and wireless technologies, as the majority of future communications will use wireless access technologies. Huawei is working on a total of five co-funded projects, of which is it leading the work packages in four of them. The five projects include:

METIS-II: Mobile and wireless communications enablers for the 2020 information society

Fantastic-5G: Flexible air interface for scalable service delivery within the wireless communications networks of the fifth generation

mmMAGIC: Millimetre-wave based mobile radio access networks for the fifth generation integrated communications

5G-Xhaul: Dynamic reconfigurable optical-wireless backhaul/fronthaul with cognitive control plane for small cells and cloud-RANs

5G Exchange: Multi-Domain Orchestration for Software Defined Infrastructures

In addition to the 5G PPP initiative Huawei has been driving a number of additional 5G projects in Europe. In conjunction with the University of Surrey in the UK Huawei is conducting a joint 5G research programme and by 2018 plans to invest a total of ?5 million in 5G research including a testbed.

Together with its European partners, Huawei has also launched the 5G Vertical Industry Accelerator (5G VIA) in Munich. This partnership includes a large-scale 5G testbed which simulates real-world scenarios through vertical industries.

Recognising the work Huawei has achieved in this area, it received the “Biggest Contribution to 5G Development” award at the 5G World Summit 2015 in June 2015. This was awarded for Huawei’s continuous innovation in the field of 5G, particularly in new air interface technologies.
