A1 Alnwick South Bridge work reaches final phase
Highways England project manager, Shaun Cullumbine, said:
Every effort has been made to ensure disruption to traffic, residents and businesses has been kept to a minimum and this will continue in the second phase of the works.
The second phase of the renovations will see the northbound carriageway of the A1 over the bridge closed, with traffic moved over to the southbound carriageway. North and southbound traffic will be in a single lane contraflow on the southbound carriageway.
In order to complete the work the traffic management on the A1 must be altered. This will take place on 7 July and will take two nights. The A1 will be closed in both directions between 8pm and 6am on these nights for the safety of our road workers. Diversions will be clearly signed through Alnwick.
Vehicles travelling north on the A1 will have unrestricted access into Alnwick. However, from 8 July there will be no access on to the A1 northbound from the Alnwick south interchange and a diversion route will be in place.
Vehicles travelling south on the A1 will be able to access Alnwick. The slip road on to the southbound A1 from Alnwick south interchange, which has been closed during phase one, will reopen to traffic on 8 July.
The A1068 Shilbottle road will remain under traffic light control and reduced to a single lane. The scaffolding will be moved from one side of the bridge to the other, which will require a road closure from 8pm on 8 July until 6am on 9 July. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.
