Mikhailovsky Tunnel in Moscow will be open to road traffic in September 2015
The six-lane tunnel, which consists of twenty sections, will run through Bolshaya Akademicheskaya Street and under the existing tramway on Mikhalkovskaya Street. It will be a part of the two-level traffic interchange at the intersection of Bolshaya Akademicheskaya Street and Mikhalkovskaya Street. Currently, nine sections out of twenty have been completed. Construction is carried out 24 hours a day, in several shifts. After construction is complete, the builders will have to implement improvement and landscaping of the adjacent territory.
Mostotrest is implementing unique construction technology in order to complete the project. The tunnel will be equipped with modern soundproof and water shutoff systems. Especially considering that the water level at the Mikhailovsky Ponds located nearby is a few meters above the roadway, waterproof panels have been erected.
The project also entails reconstruction work to widen the driveway of Bolshaya Akademicheskaya Street and Nizhnelihoborsky Proezd to six lanes (three in each direction). Mostotrest will also upgrade the adjacent road network, built road arms for local traffic and public transport, as well as two U-turn exits above the tunnel’s enclosed section. In addition, the project entails rearrangement of utilities, construction of 3 pedestrian underpasses and installation of an automated traffic control system.
Noise barriers with a total length of about 2 km will be erected, while soundproof windows will be installed in homes located in close proximity to the reconstruction area. The total length of the Bolshaya Akademicheskaya Street segment to be rebuilt is 4.7 km.
The road segment under reconstruction is part of the Northwest through driveway between Skolkovo Avenue and Yaroslavl Avenue, providing a link between the North and the South of Moscow and alleviating traffic congestion the city center.
