OREANDA-NEWS. May 20, 2015. Team Honda HRC's Cole Seely had hoped for more at the Hangtown Motocross season opener, but despite showing promise with competitive times during qualifying, his day was ended prematurely by a hard crash in the early going of moto one. Nevertheless, the Red Riders were ecstatic with the performance of GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac, who dominated both motos aboard his CRF450R to earn a convincing overall win.

After qualifying sixth quickest in the timed practice session, Seely launched off the line to a top-five start in the first moto but went down moments later and was unable to rejoin the race. After he was evaluated by the Asterisk Mobile Medical crew, the team decided to sideline Seely for the remainder of the day as a precaution. The Californian plans return to action at the Glen Helen round next weekend.

NOTES

  • It was a busy week for the Honda HRC crew, as they arrived early in the Sacramento area on Thursday for press day duties. After interviews with members of the local media, riders were given the benefit of two 20-minute practice sessions ahead of Saturday's race. "It's always a benefit to get time on the track prior to the race, especially during motocross season," Seely said. "During Supercross we only get to ride a portion of the track for a short period of time, but in motocross we get to ride the whole track for two long sessions, which allows us to test out certain settings and make different changes prior to the race if needed."
  • During the off weekend following the Supercross finale, the Team Honda HRC crew members spent some much-needed time relaxing with friends and family before hitting the road for the 12-round AMA Motocross series. "It was really nice to not have to jump on a plane for a weekend, and to be able to spend some time at home," said mechanic Rich Simmons. "We had some friends out from Ohio, so it was great to catch up with them for a few days."
  • One the eve of the race, Seely joined GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac, Justin Bogle, Matt Bisceglia, RJ Hampshire and Jordan Smith for an autograph signing at the local powerhouse dealer, Roseville Honda. Fans lined up to meet their favorite riders and for a chance to win a Honda Grom. At the conclusion of the event, Seely drew the winning ticket, with the Grom going to Cory Call.
  • After Trey Canard broke his arm at the Detroit Supercross on March 21, the hope was that he would be ready in time to begin the AMA Motocross series. Still, the team didn't want to rush things and have the Oklahoman return prematurely, and Canard ultimately didn't attend the Hangtown stop. An exact return date hasn't been given, but the team looks forward to having Canard back in the semi soon.
  • Tomac led the charge during Saturday morning qualifying, topping both practices and setting a best time of 2:02.003, over 2 seconds faster than the next rider. Seely landed sixth, with a 2:07.028.
  • Tomac was one of the few riders to jump Hangtown's new 150-foot step-up jump, which is now the longest jump on the circuit.
  • In moto two, Tomac put an exclamation point on what had already been an impressive weekend, stretching his lead on second place to over one and a half minutes by the checkered flag. His quickest lap of the moto was logged at 2:05.571, over five seconds better than the next-best rider.

THE FOCUS: In to Out

As any race fan knows, Supercross and motocross are different in many ways, and like all the teams, Team Honda HRC makes a number of shifts in its approach to the two series. "For motocross, we use slightly different equipment," said crew chief Jason Haines. "Taking into consideration the higher temperatures and longer races, we use slightly bigger radiators for more coolant capacity. We also use larger works HGA titanium tanks in order to increase the bikes' range, and the gearing is changed slightly for the longer, rougher straightaways and larger jumps."

Whereas race-day suspension changes were rare by the end of the Supercross season, it's not abnormal for the team to make a number of adjustments during the first few outdoor rounds, until each rider's optimum settings are identified. "It's definitely harder to get prepared for the motocross season because of how tight the schedule is," Cole Seely admitted. "We're testing and riding Supercross from mid-September—before Monster Energy Cup—to the end of the season, with just a few motocross test sessions in between and only have a week off before the next series starts. I enjoy it though; I like testing and finding new settings because I'm still open to a lot of things and don't yet know what I like and don't like. It's cool to run through the options and see what I like best for suspension, chassis and engine."

Seely also said that his training transitions slightly for the motocross series. "Instead of doing sprint sessions, we'll do longer rides, like 30 minute plus two laps, to replicate a race situation"

QUOTES

Cole Seely
"Today started pretty good. I got sixth in qualifying and got off to a pretty decent start in the first moto. I think I was running about fourth or fifth coming around the first turn, but in the second turn I got pushed out a little wide and couldn't really see where I was going, so I hit a bump and high-sided, hitting the ground pretty hard. I got a bad Charlie horse on my leg and hit my head pretty good, so the team and I decided it was better to sit the second race out and not risk it so I can come back strong at Glen Helen. Definitely not the way I wanted to start the series, only making it a couple hundred yards, but I'm confident because I had good practice times and the bike felt good. I'll just bounce back next weekend."

Keisuke Inomoto: Representative Director – Team Honda HRC Motocross
"GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac showed an amazing performance today, and I just don't know what to say! Unfortunately Team Honda HRC's Cole Seely crashed out of the first moto and didn't race second moto, but he also showed good pace during the qualifier. I'm expecting him to come back strong with good results next week."

Dan Betley: Team Manager
"It was a bittersweet day, but all in all it was great. I can't say enough about Eli today; he dominated every time he was out on the track. He topped both practice sessions and led every single lap to win both races. I just couldn't be happier for him; he did such a great job. The whole team is working great and we're on our way up and I love it. Unfortunately, Cole hit his head, and we felt it was best for him to sit out the second moto. Despite that, I'm happy with where our bike performance is for both riders; we only had to make a few clicker changes throughout the day, and we were good."

Rich Simmons: Mechanic (Cole Seely)
"Today was disappointing for Cole but I'm happy that he's okay and will be back next weekend. It's not the way we wanted to start out the season, but he was riding well and had the speed during practice so that's a good start."
