BNY Mellon Wealth Management’s Providence, Rhode Island team recently hosted a breakfast meeting featuring the state’s new governor – and the first female to hold that office – Gina Raimondo. Nearly 100 leaders in business and education from across the state turned out to hear the Democrat governor lay out her economic blueprint for revitalizing the state.BNY Mellon Wealth Management’s goal in hosting the event was to promote a shared sense of purpose among the guests, across political lines, to help Rhode Island become once again the vibrant economy it once was.“Rhode Island needs a comeback economy, but there’s no magic wand, it will take time,” Raimondo told the guests in her characteristic directness. The governor then identified three key challenges confronting the state: a yawning \$200 million-plus budget deficit, a critical shortage of skilled workers and high paying jobs, and a complex tax and regulatory system that isn’t as business-friendly as needed to attract more outside investment.“Rhode Island is a small state with limited resources. We hosted this breakfast to help spark business and government collaborations needed to address the issues the Governor laid out during her talk,” said Tom Fay, president of the wealth management office in Providence.Raimondo urged the group to take action and work together to bring much needed change. “Avoid cynicism – believe in Rhode Island,” she said. “The business community needs to opt-in on revitalizing Rhode Island.”Based on comments from guests after the talk, Tom Fay felt it achieved what he had hoped: “After the breakfast, I was struck by how energized the guests were by the Governor’s appeal for us to work together. I’m proud that BNY Mellon was able to make this happen and play a part in helping the community face its economic challenges.”
