Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] reaffirms its commitment to sustainable growth and environmental performance with the release of a report that demonstrates success in achieving a smaller environmental footprint, more effective supplier partnerships and enhanced ethical conduct controls. The report highlights the corporation’s efforts in 2014 to promote sustainability throughout its operations, including implementing its Sustainability Management Plan, a comprehensive set of sustainability commitments and metrics.

“Over the past several years our scientists and engineers have successfully applied their expertise to reduce our energy usage, optimize our manufacturing processes, and reduce our carbon emissions,” said Marillyn Hewson, Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and CEO. “And we’re not done. We will continue to push the boundaries of innovation and find new ways to deliver additional value for our business and our communities.”

The 2014 Sustainability Report assesses management and achievements in these areas:

  • Resource Efficiency – In 2014, the corporation reduced energy use by 15 percent, carbon emissions by 20 percent, water use by 21 percent and waste sent to landfills by 47 percent. New on-site renewable energy projects that are being rolled out will generate additional clean power for our operations.
  • Governance Efforts - Lockheed Martin upholds high standards and controls for ethical business conduct, compliance and transparency. The corporation released an updated, digital code of conduct that outlines clearer expectations for its standards of sustainability and security for employees, customers and suppliers. 
  • Product Performance Innovations – The corporation increased investments in sustainability drivers such as nuclear, ocean, tidal energy; cyber security services; lightweight materials; and unmanned air and undersea systems. 
  • Information Security – Lockheed Martin continued to strengthen our cyber security and information technology capabilities, as we work to protect our business and our customers from growing cyber threats.
  • Supplier Sustainability - In 2014, the corporation trained 14,000 of our suppliers on the risk of counterfeit parts, raising awareness of this important problem and helping alleviate quality and safety risks in our supply chain.
  • Talent Competitiveness – Lockheed Martin exceeded our employee attrition targets while advancing our culture of diversity and inclusion. The corporation invested in new partnerships with non-profit organizations to promote science, technology, engineering and math education to inspire the next generation of innovators.

In 2014, Lockheed Martin was named to the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World Index; named one of the top companies on both the CDP’s Performance and Disclosure Leadership Indices; and ranked as a sector leader based on its environmental, social and governance record by MSCI’s Intangible Value Assessment. Corporate Responsibility Magazine recently named Lockheed Martin to its “100 Best Corporate Citizens” list for the third consecutive year, climbing to the rank of number 10 in 2015.

The Lockheed Martin 2014 Sustainability Report also includes a letter of opinion from an external advisory panel of experts that reviewed the report. Environmental data were verified by an independent third-party, and the report adheres to the Global Reporting Initiative G4 reporting guidelines.
