OREANDA-NEWS. April 22, 2015. The RUSNANO Portfolio Company, ELVEES NeoTek, Has Designed and Manufactured a New Semantic Processor for Computer Vision Systems.

VIP-1 (Video Intelligence Processor-1) promises to be the most versatile chip ever designed in Russia. It can be used in tablets, laptops, navigation devices, mobile communication systems, robotic systems, industrial control systems, and even for self-drive systems in vehicles.

VIP-1 is a brand new 6-core heterogeneous system-on-chip (SoC), designed to serve the rapidly growing markets of semantic image analysis and computer vision (average annual market growth rates are in excess of 25%). ELVEES NeoTek is already using the new processor to create a range of devices with strong capabilities for video analytics and for the recognition of events and images, including a new generation of IP-cameras. The company will begin marketing these new devices in the near future.

ELVEES NeoTek already offers a broad range of solutions used by various industries, including equipment to ensure security at major airports and at fuel and energy facilities. Conversion to a 40-nanometer process enables the company to produce integrated circuits and systems based on them, which offer high speeds with low power consumption.

The main component of the VIP-1 is a built-in dedicated video processor with unique processing capacities for video analytics and semantic processing of video images. The processor supports all main video analytics procedures, copes with stereo images and easily handles encoding and decoding of video streams in HD and Ultra HD (4K) format at speeds up to 60 frames per second. This makes VIP-1 competitive with the latest versions of Rockchip, MediaTek, Allwinner, Freescale and Qualcomm processors that use 28 nanometer technologies with 6–8 universal cores.

VIP-1 also has an inbuilt navigation receiver supporting the three standard navigation systems (GLONASS, GPS and the Chinese BeiDou).

As well as a video processor VIP-1 also contains a 1 GHz ARM Cortex A9 two-coreRISC-processor, a graphics processor core and a dual-core cluster for a signal and image processor. The rich set of interfaces includes a built-in 1Gbit Ethernet controller, which enables easy integration of the VIP-1 processor solution in modern IP-systems. VIP-1 is a powerful universal processor that can be used in various mobile and multimedia systems thanks to its compact size (fits into a 19x19 mm housing) and low power consumption (3 watts).

The president of ELVEES Group, Yaroslav Petrichkovich, said:

“Market success depends on offering customers problem-solving SoCs for specific tasks. The VIP-1 processor is mainly intended for use in the new generation of IP-cameras with built-in intelligence. Experts estimate the global market for these cameras at about USD 10 billion with potential for growth to USD 50 billion. Our company intends to win a substantial share of this market.”

Dmitry Pimkin, managing director for investment at RUSNANO Management Company, said:

“Development of the VIP-1 and the video processor, on which it is based, represents a milestone both for ELVEES NeoTek and for the Russian microelectronics industry as a whole. Russian specialists have designed a world-class system using 40-nanometer technology, including chip design and system programming. Putting this achievement in a broader context: the enormous range of existing and future applications of the solutions developed at ELVEES NeoTek makes us believe that the company will be a major player on several new and very promising markets.”
