OREANDA-NEWS. Hot on the trail of the all-new RX debut at the New York International Auto Show earlier this month, the turbocharged RX 200t now takes the spotlight at the Shanghai International Motor Show. Powered by a specially-tuned 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo engine, the RX 200t is ready to meet the demanding needs of select markets around the world.

"The pioneering spirit of Lexus drives us to create new technology and gives rise to new ideas. It allows us to introduce new vehicles with leading-edge features. And indeed, we are committed to bringing 'progressive luxury' to the world. I believe this new RX will not only surprise new customers, but will also delight and satisfy our loyal customers, whose high expectations will be met by many new innovations," said Takayuki Katsuda, the Chief Engineer of the new RX.

This vehicle has been designed for select markets around the world, one of these being China where the RX 200t has just made its debut. "Compared to the current-generation RX 270, you'll notice that a major appeal point of the RX 200t is its ability to deliver seamless and continuous acceleration up to the mid- to high-speed range," Katsuda explained.

The output of the powertrain, which features VVT-iW (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide) and a low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-liquid intercooler, will be aimed to provide more than 228 hp (170 kW). The gear ratios of the 6-speed automatic transmissions provide excellent acceleration off-the-line and exceptional passing power.

The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4, has been tuned to achieve high fuel economy and low carbon emissions. However, the RX is available with a variety of engine types to meet the diverse needs of different markets around the world. Among these is an upgraded 3.5-liter V-6, now with more power as it aims to deliver 300 hp and comes mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the hybrid model features an Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V-6 that also produces around 300 hp when combined with the electric motor.

Across the board, the RX features a new bold look to go along with its refined engines. The front of the vehicle is highlighted by completely new fascia with emboldened spindle grille and triple L-shape LED headlamps. A truly innovative styling cue is the blacked-out C-pillars, which provide a floating-roof effect never before seen on a Lexus. The appearance of the rear has been sharpened and exudes a sense of rock-solid stability even as the new L-shaped taillights wrap around the sides of the vehicle to create a wider, more authoritative presence when illuminated.

Inside, the new RX presents a cabin inimitable of comfort and luxury, with repositioned trim pieces that exude a high level of class. A specially-finished laser-cut ornamentation is available for those who desire an extra touch of opulence. Rear-seat occupants are treated to increased leg and knee space while a retractable power-operated panorama roof allows for a refreshing open-air driving experience.

Although an SUV, when it comes to delivering smooth and stable handling, the RX has few peers. The entire chassis has been fortified to provide better stability and control through turns. The RX's fully independent suspension system has been tuned and reinforced for improved handling while keeping ride quality remarkably smooth.

For those who prefer more excitement and performance in their luxury sport-utility vehicles, the RX F Sport will be available with all available engine types. The RX F Sport will feature, among other things, exclusive alloy wheels, "F Sport" badges, and an "F" mesh design on the spindle grille to visually differentiate it from the other versions?while modifications to the chassis enhance the vehicle's already superb cornering performance.

Lexus has always stressed safety in all of its vehicles, so it should come as no surprise that the new RX incorporates significant improvement in areas concerning the well-being of its occupants. Among these new improvements are the upgraded body structure that heightens the overall passive safety of the RX, as well as the Lexus Safety System +. For even higher safety standards, options are available for the Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM), and the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM); all offering increased peace of mind to drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike.
