EIA to begin publishing crude-by-rail data

OREANDA-NEWS. March 26, 2015. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) next week will begin publishing monthly US crude-by-rail volumes retroactive to January 2010.

The agency's Petroleum Supply Monthly publication will integrate rail into petroleum supply and disposition data that already includes pipeline, tanker and barge movements.

"EIA is initiating the new series with monthly data revised to include rail movements of crude oil starting with data from January 2010 through the current reporting month, January 2015," the agency said.

The volumes of US and Canadian crude moving via rail began to increase around 2010 as domestric production surged in areas with limit pipeline access, including North Dakota's Bakken shale region.
