OREANDA-NEWS. NTT Communications Corporation (HQ: Chiyoda-ward, Tokyo, abbr.: NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within NTT (NYSE: NTT), announced today a new strategic partnership with FireEye, Inc. (HQ: 1440 McCarthy Blvd. Milpitas, CA 95035, abbr.: FireEye) to provide advanced security defense and response capabilities in Japan from the next quarter. Under the partnership, NTT Com will offer the complete FireEye product suite via its WideAngle Managed Service, augmenting its existing security capabilities with FireEye’s innovative MVX technology, threat intelligence and expertise to reduce security threats from targeted attacks and advanced persistent threat groups.

1.Background

The modern threat landscape now includes highly sophisticated attack groups that easily bypass traditional signature-based defenses by deploying targeted attack methods such as custom-malware, compromised credentials and social engineering to penetrate a network and operate undetected within an organization. According to the 2015 Mandiant M-Trends report, attackers operated on their victims’ network for an median number of 205 days before being detected. Most organizations cannot detect the initial breach or lateral movement within a network, allowing attackers access to valuable intellectual property and trade information.

To counter this activity, a modern defense posture must include information security measures that can detect unknown cyber-attacks at the point of infection as well as within a network and respond quickly to a breach before valuable data is removed.

Organizations across Japan are recognizing their current cyber defenses are inadequate, and especially for central government ministries and large firms, the damage to the organization from an attack can be devastating to their operations. In addition to the standard attack activity that persists, the volume of attacks is expected to increase as Japan accelerates planning and preparations for Tokyo 2020, the world’s greatest sporting event.

2.Overview

NTT Com and FireEye*1 have formed a strategic partnership to help organizations update their security posture. As part of the Enhanced WideAngle Managed Security Service, NTT Com will offer Real Time Malware Detection "RTMD" to identify previously unknown malware using the FireEye MVX engine*2, a virtual environment that detects and analysis unknown malware through multiple vectors including, network traffic, email and endpoints. When a threat is identified, RTMD can isolate the malware and block any outbound communication triggered by an attack.

Once an attack is identified, NTT Com will manage the response to determine the extent of an attack and use FireEye Threat Intelligence to help identify if an advanced attack group was involved with the operation. As part of this service, NTT Com will help prevent further damage or data exfiltration in the clients’ ICT environments, this protection extends to endpoints, a common attack vector.

The combination of capabilities from NTT Com*3 and FireEye can provide organizations with operational security capabilities without requiring additional, specialized security headcount, and this measure is able to be introduced at the reasonable metered-charge depending on the number of users by MSSP*4-model.
