OREANDA-NEWS. Deutsche Telekom is making it even more secure for businesses to use software from the cloud. In future, users of Microsoft Office 365, the cloud-based office software suite, can themselves encrypt their data both on its way into the cloud and in the cloud itself. The new encryption package by T Systems subsidiary Multimedia Solutions is based on a solution by CipherCloud, a startup company supported by Deutsche Telekom. In 2014, the two partners released a solution that can be used to encrypt the Salesforce customer relationship management system. It enables the secure utilization and full control of data in private, hybrid and public cloud applications, and resolves concerns regarding data protection and regulation in cloud applications.

Companies that have been reluctant to use the cloud so far due to privacy concerns can now use standard programs such as Office 365 from the cloud without any worry. After a one-time integration of the CipherCloud gateway in the customer's network infrastructure, it encrypts data both on its way into the cloud and in the cloud itself when Office 365 is used. All data is encrypted with the AES-256 standard before it exits the company's internal network toward Microsoft Office 365 or Salesforce in the cloud, without affecting the data structure or operations.

The individual users of the software from the cloud do not have to activate any additional features, because encryption is performed automatically in the background. Users can decide themselves which data they want to encrypt for which applications. They could choose to encrypt only individual fields, such as those with personal data, individual documents or even the entire e-mail traffic via Outlook.

The data is only decrypted when an authorized employee retrieves it from the cloud. As such, the information is always protected against external access, regardless of the location of the cloud data center. Not even the cloud provider's administrators can decrypt the data. In addition, if the data is stored at a German data center, it is also subject to Germany's strict data protection regulations.
