Indian PCI imports fall in January

London, 5 March (Argus) — Indian imports of pulverised coal injection (PCI) material totalled 162,000t in January, down by 32pc year on year, according Indian state-owned trading services firm Mjunction.

The January total was also a 45pc decline from the 292,000t of Indian PCI imports tracked by Mjunction in December.

Australian PCI accounted for 142,880t of the recorded Indian PCI imports in January, with the remaining 18,683t comprising high-ash South African energy coal sold as PCI.

The port of Kolkata-Haldia received the largest amount of PCI in January, with imports of 97,000t more than treble the 31,000t received in January 2014 and December's 27,000t. Kolkata's total PCI imports for the first 10 months of the 2014-15 fiscal year, which started in April, stood at 493,000t, a 62pc increase on the same period of the previous fiscal year.

Other ports receiving PCI in January were Mundra, which took 34,000t, New Mangalore with 15,000t and Paradip with 15,000t. Mjunction tracked no PCI shipments to Vizag, which received 120,000t of PCI shipments in December.

Australia's combined exports to India of semi-soft coking coal and PCI totalled 790,000t in January, down by 4pc year on year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
