Cherkizovo Group Launches an Innovative Data Centre
There are 32 high load racks in the data centre containing the corporate network hub and server platforms for all key business applications (SAP, 1C, CSB, corporate mail, etc.).
The modular structure made a full-scale launch of the data centre possible in 10 months, which is about half the time for a typical project to build a corporate data centre.
“Our IT strategy is focused on supporting a reliable high tech landscape for a growing business, consolidating computing resources, reducing their operating costs, improving fail-safety and centralizing IT infrastructure management. In this context, construction of the data centre had priority,” says Vladislav Belyaev, Head of IT at Cherkizovo Group. “As a result, we now have a modern corporate data centre with high-performance infrastructure allowing us to effectively meet the challenges of expanding production and increasing capacity. The implemented design also supports a high technology-enhanced level of mobility of the data centre itself — we can literally move it quickly to another location if necessary.”
An outdoor site on the grounds of the Cherkizovsky Meat Processing Plant in Moscow was allocated for construction of the data centre. This was due to the choice of a mobile data centre and resulted in a number of additional requirements that broadened the project’s technological boundaries: integrator’s experts strictly managed lead times and logistics, and chose process solutions that would meet all conditions at the facility.
Greenfield site preparation was carried out in the first phase, which included laying the foundation. Power supplies from two standalone sources, communication channels and a water supply system were led in to the chosen site to maintain data centre operations. Specialists from Jet Infosystems prepared the design documentation, which Contain-RZ experts used to customize the infrastructure configuration of the modular containers with consideration of Cherkizovo’s requirements for capacity and reliability.
Then, experts from Jet Infosystems installed the modular structure on the prepared site. The designed modular room system secures the allocated equipment against electrical, temperature, climatic and shock load among other things.
The second phase included a work package for design and implementation of turnkey building subsystems at the data centre. An uninterruptible power supply to maintain data centre operation for at least 15 minutes, ventilation and air conditioning systems, a clean agent fire suppression system, access control and video surveillance systems were installed, and a structure cable system was deployed. Most of the subsystems have redundancy of at least N+1 to ensure fail-safety. Automatic switching of the data centre to a power supply from a diesel generator unit designed to operate for 8 hours without recharging is provided in case of a power outage.
“A unique feature of the design I’d like to mention is the use of the most advanced data centre construction technologies on the market today for performing very specific business and IT tasks,” says Sergei Andronov, Director of the Network Solutions Centre at Jet Infosystems. “The modular approach has substantially decreased the time required to launch the data centre, deploy it at the proposed site and support the required computing capacity, including by moving the air conditioning system to a raised floor, which increased the data centre’s usable space by nearly 30%.”
The data centre’s subsystems are tied into the utilities of all buildings at the plant and are connected to an integrated monitoring system that tracks temperature readings and loads on the most critical equipment, etc. If the threshold values are reached, the monitoring system immediately notifies the responsible administrator, and its interface allows remote control of engineered systems.
Cherkizovo Group (LSE:CHE; MOEX:GCHE) is Russia’s largest meat and feed producer. The Group is one of three leaders on the poultry meat, pork and sausage product markets. The company’s best known brands are Cherkizovsky, Petelinka, Kurinoe Tsarstvo and Mosselprom. CEO Sergei Mikhailov and his family control 63% of Cherkizovo Group, and 37% of the shares are quoted on the LSE and RTS/MICEX.Due to its vertically integrated structure, which includes agricultural land, grain storage facilities, feed production, livestock breeding, growing and slaughtering, as well as meat processing and integrated distribution, Cherkizovo has consistently delivered sustainable revenue and profit growth. The company’s consolidated revenue was more than \$1.6 billion in 2013, and it produced more than 500,000 tonnes of meat products.
Cherkizovo Group’s strategy calls for organic growth and setting up new plants, as well as consolidating its assets. In the past 5 years alone, Cherkizovo Group has invested more than \$1 billion in development of the domestic agriculture sector.
