Six Engines for a new Power Station in Gibraltar
OREANDA-NEWS. MAN Diesel & Turbo has signed a contract to deliver three 14V51/60G gas and three 14V51/60DF dual-fuel engines to supply a new power station for Gibraltar. While MDT is responsible for the supply and commissioning of the engines, the plant will be built by the French EPC contractor Bouygues Energies & Services SAS. It will have a capacity of 2x40 MW and will replace several existing but dated diesel engine plants, which also operate MDT aggregates.
“This new contract opens the next chapter in a decade-long partnership,” says Dr. Hermann Kr?ger, Senior Vice President at MAN Diesel & Turbo and Head of the Business Unit Power Plants. “MAN engines have provided electrical power to Gibraltar for many decades and will continue to do so for many more.”
“This is a significant project for us,” adds Howard Barnes, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Power Sales at MAN Diesel & Turbo. “The Government of Gibraltar was looking for reliable generation capacities with a low carbon footprint. The chosen combination of gas and dual-fuel provides both. The plant benefits from low CO2 emissions when run on natural gas and yet offers full fuel flexibility via the three dual-fuel engines.”
The 51/60G is the latest addition to MAN Diesel & Turbo’s family of gas engines. The 14-cylinder version has an electrical power output of 14.3 MW and a single cycle efficiency of up to 50 percent which can be increased to a combined cycle efficiency of over 52 percent.
“It is an exceptionally efficient machine that has been specifically designed to meet today’s increased need for operational flexibility,” explains Dr. Tilman T?tken, Vice President and European Head of Power Sales at MAN Diesel & Turbo. “At the same time it’s very robust. It can operate in 95 percent of all ambient conditions worldwide without derating and runs effortlessly on a wide range of gas types and qualities. We are very proud that the 51/60G will help to supply the people in Gibraltar with sustainable energy.”
