CityFibre announces first win in Wales with Logicalis
The project was awarded under the UK's Public Services Network (PSN) framework and is the first for CityFibre in Wales, marking the second win for CityFibre's dark fibre solutions in partnership with an accredited provider to the framework, following the deal with the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, announced in August 2014.
The initial fibre deployment in Newport will connect over 40 sites and will be designed to accommodate the growing community safety estate. The network will allow Newport City Council to harness future smart technologies as the city evolves, including ultra-high definition CCTV, digital information boards, and traffic and alarm monitoring applications.
As with previously announced projects, CityFibre expects over time to expand beyond the initial scope of build-out to encompass potential further opportunities including additional public sector sites, businesses, mobile cell sites and the residential broadband segment, under its Gigabit City model.
Greg Mesch, Chief Executive Office of CityFibre, commented:
"This project forms an essential part of transforming Newport into a modern, fully connected, digital city and we are delighted to be working alongside Logicalis, a prominent name in both the public sector and enterprise space. Their selection of us as partner is a powerful endorsement of CityFibre's model, and we look forward to exploring further PSN opportunities with them.
"As we move ever closer to living in a truly connected world, the network that runs throughout UK cities will increasingly act as the arteries that allow it to consistently evolve, technologically, for the benefit of its residents. We believe CityFibre will play an ever increasing role in the evolution of that vision as the demand for future proof gigabit connectivity continues to grow."
Mark Starkey, Managing Director of Logicalis added:
"We have been working with the local authorities in Wales for a long time now and are continuing to build on that collaboration. There is huge potential to transform Welsh cities by installing future-proof fibre networks and support community-changing initiatives such as this through the exploitation of this infrastructure. We see this project in Newport as the first step on a long-term partnership with CityFibre."
