OREANDA-NEWS. January 15, 2015. This was informed to the journalists by the Director of the Department of foreign exchange operations of NBM Lucia Hadarca, noting that the current dynamics of the rate of leu vs. dollar and Euro is due to a number of internal and external factors.

She stressed that the dollar has recently strengthened vs. the currencies of other countries, due to the growth of the U.S. economy, while in EU it is expected recession and there is a danger of deflation. According to NBM, all these external factors affect the dollar and euro in the Republic of Moldova.

In addition, in the country is registered a higher demand for foreign currency by the companies purchasing dollars for settlements with suppliers of gas and electricity or a seasonal factor. Lucia Hadarca said that over 11 months of 2014 foreign currency supply from individuals decreased by 23%, and the demand on the part of legal entities has remained virtually unchanged. As a result, the degree of coverage of the demand for currency companies the proposal on the part of individuals made up 82%.

The gap was covered by the NBM interventions. The Director of the Department of foreign currency NBM operations has also stated that the Russian ruble continued to devalue this year, and since the beginning of the year it has depreciated by 10%. Lucia Hadarca said that all these factors affect the dynamics of the exchange rate in Moldova. She stressed that NBM has been monitoring the situation at the currency market, but does not interfere, since during the holidays the currency is procured from individuals, and there was no necessity of the NBM to enter to the market. Lucia Hadarca reminded that the last year the NBM had made sufficiently massive intervention. According to her, the national Bank does not make predictions on the future dynamics of the rate of leu vs. dollar and euro.

She did not rule out that the demand for currency may rise due to the fact that companies need now to pay for the import of gas and electricity.
