Verizon Empowers Social Awareness
OREANDA-NEWS. January 15, 2015. Innovative solutions to social problems take great minds, great skills and great resources. We believe powerful answers can come from anywhere, and we know we can’t solve these problems alone. That’s why we recently partnered with USA Network on the Characters Unite College Tour. Our goal: Empowering students to speak out on the issues they care about most.
Verizon visited college campuses across the country to raise awareness about hate and discrimination.
Students created personalized “I Won’t Stand For …” T-shirts to bring attention to the social issue most important to them, such as bullying, racism, dating abuse, sexism and homophobia. Photos of their declarations were posted to the Characters Unite online gallery to share with friends and family via social media.
“Being socially responsible is part of who we are and how we do business,” says Magda Yrizarry, Verizon’s chief talent and diversity officer. “So it’s to be expected that this commitment extends to Verizon’s college campus initiatives where the company recruits potential employees. The Characters Unite College Tour allowed us to engage with amazing college students who are bringing attention to a range of worthy social issues.”
The tour stopped at the following college campuses:
Columbus State Community College (Columbus, Ohio)
Howard University (Washington, D.C.)
University of Maryland, College Park
Midlands Technical College (Columbia, South Carolina)
Georgia Perimeter College, Clarkston Campus
University of Texas at Austin
University of New Mexico (Albuquerque)
