OREANDA-NEWS. December 24, 2014. Moldova’s Premier Iurie Leanca said this to the EU Commissioner for Energy Maros Sevcovic while discussing measures Moldova’s authorities had taken to diversify our country’s energy sources.

According to Iurie Leanca, having Moldova connected to the EU energy market, which offers best solutions to ensure energy security of our country, is one of key goals of Moldova’s government. In this connection, the officials raised the matter of the Iasi-Ungheni interconnector, which needs the extension and additional efforts to achieve the diversification goal. The Premier called on the EU Commissioner to support the further implementation of the project so that to extended the interconnector to Chisinau and to use it in full by 2017.

Besides, Iurie Leanca seconded the EU initiative to create a working group of high-ranking officials to find solutions to the matters of interconnection of European energy markets and diversification of gas deliveries. According to Iurie Leanca, to consolidate the infrastructure of Moldova’s energy market the authorities are considering an opportunity of having the domestic energy market connected to the EU one through Romania.

In January 2015, Moldova and Romania are going to sign a memorandum to confirm the top priority of the interconnection of the gas and power networks of the two states, Iurie Leanca said. According to Maros Sefcovic, the Energy Alliance goes beyond the boundaries of the EU and the European energy infrastructure will include Moldova too.
