MODEC Confirms SKWID Sank into Waters
OREANDA-NEWS. MODEC, Inc. (MODEC) confirms that a Floating Wind & Current Hybrid Power Generation System (SKWID) constructed by MODEC sank into the waters sometime before daylight on December 18, 2014 (local Tokyo Time) while in the process of being installed. The identified location is 1.2km off the coast of Kabe Island, Karatsu-City, Saga Prefecture.
The sunken SKWID uses lubricating oils, however, we have received confirmation that there is no spill or environmental contamination in the waters and that no one was injured due to this incident.
Final details about the incident are not yet known but every possible action is being taken into consideration to safeguard the environment by our Field Response Team.
Once weather conditions improve in this area, we will start salvaging the SKWID in the safest manner.
