Electric Taxis Make Capital Debut in Tallinn
OREANDA-NEWS. November 14, 2014. Completely electric-powered taxis have began service in Tallinn, the fourth city in Estonia to open such a service.
Around 30 electric taxis currently serve Tartu, Parnu and Kuressaare, ETV reported.
Maintenance and fuel costs are just a fifth of petrol or diesel taxis, and the electric taxis will have the added advantage of being allowed to drive on Tallinn's Old Town streets which are otherwise closed for traffic.
Estonia has build an extensive network of electric vehicle charging stations. The government has also heavily subsidized electric car purchases. 41 were sold in October in Estonia.
Nissan Leaf is the popular choice for electric taxis, although one Tesla Model S is also available for rent.
