Airports Going Green 2014 Award Recipients Announced
OREANDA-NEWS. November 11, 2014. The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2014 Airports Going Green award. This prestigious award recognizes the value of each project, as well as the project sponsor's outstanding leadership in pursuit of sustainability within the aviation industry. Made from reclaimed wood,these beautiful awards were presented by CDA Commissioner Rosemarie S. Andolino at the 7th Annual Airports Going Green Conference in Chicago during the luncheon on Tuesday, November 4th.

San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 Expansion
In 2013, San Diego International Airport completed the largest improvement project in its history. The airport was awarded LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. This makes San Diego International Airport the first LEED Platinum certified commercial airport terminal in the world.
Premier Restaurant Group Green Concessions Program
The Premier Restaurant Group, a MAC One company, is the operator of sixteen restaurants and bars at Chicago's Midway International Airport. All of their concessions have been reviewed and rated under the Sustainable Airport Manual rating system.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Corporate Responsibility Program
Schiphol's Corporate Responsibility Program focuses on conducting business with respect for people, the environment, and the surrounding area. The airport keeps its surrounding community feeling involved and affiliated with the airport, keeping a balance between people, planet and profit.
Incheon International Airport Energy Management and Conservation System
Incheon International Airport strives to become a "Green Airport" and has established four key strategies to realize that goal. These include the implementation of a green management system, efficient energy conservation, energy independence, and carbon neutrality.
Los Angeles International Airport LAX Dunes Endangered El Segundo Blue Butterfly Habitat
Los Angeles International Airport has 307 acres of sand dunes voluntarily set aside as a nature preserve. Native animals and plants, including the beautiful and delicate El Segundo Blue Butterfly, are thriving again as part of the restoration project by Los Angeles World Airports, community organizations and volunteers.
Portland International Jetport Terminal Expansion
The Portland International Jetport terminal expansion is a 137,000 square foot addition, with a new ticketing hall, security checkpoint, concessions, four new gates, airline ticketing offices, baggage make-up, and a new in-line baggage handling system. The terminal is a complete transformation, making it a new gateway to the State of Maine, known for environmental stewardship and the beauty of its coastal and woodland natural environments.
Sweet Beginnings, LLC Green Industry Products & Jobs Creation Program
Sweet Beginnings, LLC along with the City's Department of Family Support Services and the North Lawndale Employment Network (NLEN) made it possible for O'Hare International Airport to be the first major on-airport apiary in the U.S. The honey from the apiary is processed and distributed as part of the Sweet Beginnings Beeline® product label. The partnership with the NLEN provides valuable job experience to ex-offenders and other disadvantaged persons in the North Lawndale community- not only in beekeeping, but also in collecting and processing honey for the production of candles, soaps, and skincare products.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport LED Lighting Replacement Program
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport LED Lighting Replacement Program included removing and replacing 3,999 175 watt metal halide light fixtures with new high efficiency 80 watt 3 light bar LED light fixtures. The fixtures were replaced on the first, second, and third levels of the airport's north and south parking decks.
Denver International Airport Deicing Management System
Denver International Airport (DEN) worked with Saab Sensis to customize a program for its own deicing operations. DEN played a key role in the development of a Deicing Manager application that could be used at any airport in the world. The Deicing Manager, combined with the existing surface management software, will allow DEN to manage deicing and snow removal activities more efficiently. This is possible by optimizing timing and communication to reduce queue times and fuel burn to the deicing pads and runways.
The 7th Annual Airports Going Green (AGG) Conference was held in downtown Chicago at the Westin Chicago River North. The conference featured more than 20 sessions and over 70 different speakers bringing together aviation sustainability leaders, experts, and innovators from around the world. Airports Going Green is jointly hosted by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).
