Government Considers Nationalizing Train Services to Russia
OREANDA-NEWS. November 10, 2014. GoRail will decide by December 1 whether it will continue selling train tickets to Moscow and St Petersburg after January 13, said GoGroup's CEO Juri Etverk.
Estonia currently only has a international rail connection to Moscow and St Petersburg, but the number of customers using these two services has dropped by 40 percent since spring 2014, reported Postimees.
"We would like to continue our business but the weakening of the ruble, the war in Ukraine and Estonia's support to sanctions against Russia are having a devastating effect," Etverk said. "Russians have been advised not to travel to the countries who have joined the sanctions and this has had an impact on our sales."
GoRail leaders met with the Minister of Economics Urve Palo and discussed the possibilities to keep the rail services to Russia operational.
One of the discussed possibilities is that the state will take over the GoRail contracts and buy newer, more comfortable trains, to service the two routes, a source from the ministry told Postimees.
