OREANDA-NEWS. October 31, 2014. Budding HK Electric engineers will be able to hone their professional knowledge from now on with the opening of the HK Electric Institute that will provide more focused and intensive training to groom engineering talents.

The inauguration ceremony was officiated by Managing Director of HK Electric, Mr. Wan Chi-tin, and Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services from the HKSAR Government, Mr. Frank Chan. Mr. Wan said that the Institute would be able to help nurture future leaders for the industry.

The Institute is established to develop staff, attract talents and retain experiences. It is led by a steering committee, with HK Electric’s Director of Operations, Mr. Yuen Sui-see, as chairman, and the general managers of related engineering divisions being members. The committee will be responsible for setting training directions and curriculum to address company needs.

HK Electric Institute will offer various courses in the area of power engineering, such as electricity legislation and operating guidelines, condition monitoring techniques of power generation, transmission and distribution equipment, etc. Designed for up-and-coming engineers and technical staff, the courses will include lectures and site practices. It is expected that more than 200 hours of professional courses will be offered each year.

Mr. Wan stressed that HK Electric was committed to staff development as the efforts by professional engineers have been the cornerstones of the Company in maintaining its position as a world-class electricity supplier.

“The HK Electric Institute will be equipping our staff with the necessary skills and will enhance their professional knowledge. With systematic and more specialised training, we hope to retain the experience that HK Electric has captured over the many years of operation, so that they can learn and provide better service to our customers,” Mr. Wan said.

“We hope the comprehensive training programmes can also help attract more young talents to join the power engineering industry,” he added.

Also speaking at today's ceremony, Mr. Frank Chan said that the setting up of HK Electric Institute fully demonstrates the Company’s core values of pursuing excellence through staff development and knowledge transfer. It also reflects HK Electric’s commitment to its staff, customers and society at large.

To leverage past experiences, retired engineering experts at management level have been invited to join as honorary lecturers. Together with other current experienced engineers working in the Company, they will be able to share their expertise and best practices with the young engineers.

HK Electric Institute will also collaborate with others in the industry, universities and professional bodies to enhance the horizon and effectiveness of the courses.

People development is a significant part of HK Electric’s human resources strategy and every year graduates are recruited to join engineering divisions under the trainee programmes. The all-round professional and leadership training has helped young talents obtain the required qualifications, while preparing them better for future career development.
