The city in the city — financial and business center New Hanza City
The financial and business centre New Hanza City received its name from a famous and historically significant Hanza Union that played an important role in Riga, as in one of the largest trading cities. In its name, the characteristic elements of the Hanza Times are symbolically united together: finances and trading, dynamic environment and international spirit. By this project, we wish to restore historical significance of Riga in the international arena, by promoting Riga as a regional financial centre.
The idea of creation and development of the financial, business and leisure centre in the territory of the former freight terminal, in the district among Pulkveza Brieza, Hanzas, Skanstes and Sporta streets, appeared more than 10 years ago, and all this time long, work of implementing this idea into life has been going on.
New Hanza City is being created in the territory of 24,5 ha where several office buildings, including the main building for ABLV Bank, a hotel, a conference hall, exclusive residential space, preschool facilities as well as a city garden with extensive green leisure area will be constructed.
With the attraction of Colliers International as a project supervisor and consultant, in 2007 an international tender for outlooks of the project was carried out. The famous German architect bureau Schaller Kyncl Architekten Stuttgart won the tender. The architect bureau analysed in details local environment, determined optimal distance among buildings and marked their location and orientation. They elaborated an offer taking into account typical structures of Riga’s buildings and cultural and historical background.
The development of New Hanza City will be implemented in several stages. At the first stage, seven buildings are planned to be built, the first one will be the main building for ABLV Bank, as well as a multifunctional office building and a shopping mall. Simultaneously, a city garden will be created. The territory of the first construction stage is planned to be with low level traffic, favorable for pedestrians and bike riders. Parking lots are planned to be mostly underground, therefore, publically open space that will fuse with the territory of a planned garden in the Eastern part will create an attractive and beautiful landscape.
As of today, more than 28 million euro has been already invested in the project New Hanza City. According to the plans, the project implementation will be fully completed by 2033.
