OREANDA-NEWS. October 14, 2014. With its Q3 2014 results, Munich Airport has yet again posted new records: for the first time, the airport handled more than 30 million passengers in the first three quarters of a calendar year.

A major factor behind this result was strong passenger demand in the third quarter: the 11.4 million passengers using the airport between July and September represent an all-time high for a single quarter in Munich. September also set a new single-month traffic record, with 3.8 million passengers. And Friday, September 26 entered the record books as the busiest day in the airport's history, with 144,954 passengers.

The 285,000 take-offs and landings during the first three quarters of this year was 1.5 percent lower than the figure for the first nine months of 2013: a reflection of the fact that airlines are operating larger aircraft in Munich.

The growth in passenger figures at Munich Airport resulted from the strong gains in international traffic. During the first nine months of the year, growth was above average in particular in the intercontinental segment, which posted a year-on-year increase of about 7 percent to approximately 4.7 million passengers. On continental routes, 18.4 million travelers took advantage of the extensive range of destinations: a 2.5 percent increase over the previous year. Traffic to and from domestic destinations in Germany showed a slight 0.6 percent decrease.

Complementing the gains in passenger numbers, the airfreight segment also posted a new record. Total cargo handled at Munich Airport in the first nine months of this year exceeded 215,000 tons, or 7.1 percent more than in the same period a year earlier. This topped the previous record set in 2011.
