OREANDA-NEWS. September 22, 2014. Repair and maintenance works were completed at the sulfuric acid production facility of Kola MMC’s smelting shop. Over 700 tons of convertor dust were removed from the ducts to improve draft properties during the 24 days it took to complete maintenance.

Further repairs were conducted on equipment damaged by aggressive operating environment. Demisters were replaced at the drying and absorption sections of trains one and two of sulfuric acid production facility. Such demisters prevent sulfuric acid splatter reducing corresponding atmospheric emissions. Additionally contact mass was fully replaced in catalytic reactor No.1 (40 tons) and acid resistant coating was reapplied at the washing tower and in local collectors.

Sulfuric acid production facility plays a vital part in ecological performance of the Company’s production assets located in direct proximity of the border in Nikel by processing convertors’ flue gas to produce sulfuric acid. Execution of annual repair and maintenance operations is a prerequisite for safe and consistent equipment operation.
