OREANDA-NEWS. September 12, 2014. The Minister of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) for competition and antimonopoly regulation, Nurlan Aldabergenov, took part in an international event – “Competition Day in Russia” in St Petersburg.

The Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) was formed in 2011; it is a working body of the countries of the Customs Union: Belarus, Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation.

Nurlan Aldabergenov specially emphasized the efforts to improve the antimonopoly law. This area is one of the priorities, since within the Customs Union the antimonopoly law must combine the norms designed to protect domestic market and the norms aimed at reducing prices and save consumer money.

For instance, at the end of October 2013 the Model Competition Law was adopted with support of FAS, the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Belarus, and the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Competition Protection.

“The Model Competition Law combines the best norms of antimonopoly regulation in the three countries. I would like to express my gratitude to the colleagues from Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, and the colleagues from UNCTAD and competition authorities of Austria and South Korea for support and joint efforts”, pointed out Nurlan Aldabergenov.

He also outlined EEC powers to control over cross-border markets. For example, the Commission monitors and analyses markets in aviation and railways, cell communications, pharmaceuticals, etc., on a regular basis.

Finally, Nurlan Aldabergenov emphasized the importance of competition advocacy. He believes it is essential to raise awareness of the population what advantages can consumers gain under the conditions of developed competition.
