Historic Douglas DC-3 Airplane Lands at SFO with Legendary Aviators
OREANDA-NEWS. In conjunction with the current SFO Museum exhibition, The Legend of CNAC: China National Aviation Corporation, 1929-1949, a vintage Douglas DC-3 owned and operated by the Historic Flight Foundation will be at SFO on Saturday, September 6th at 9:00AM. On board will be former CNAC Captain Peter Goutiere who piloted the aircraft to China over seventy years ago. Goutiere and his fellow CNAC airmen pioneered the Himalayan air route known as the Hump, and this airplane made hundreds of those trips. Fellow CNAC Captain Moon F. Chin plans to be on hand to greet his friend at the aircraft. It will be a remarkable reunion of men and machine. Goutiere is 100 years of age while Chin, 101, has seniority.
The flight has been arranged by the CNAC Association, a nonprofit membership group of former CNAC personnel, their families, and friends. The DC-3 is painted in the historic livery of Pan American Airways, which owned the minority share of CNAC and ran its operating division from 1933 to 1949.
The CNAC exhibition is accompanied by an educational program of lectures, panel discussion, and a book signing in the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum at SFO on Saturday, September 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is jointly presented by SFO Museum and the CNAC Association and is open to the public free of charge.
