OREANDA-NEWS. The Federal Agency of Air Transport of Russia issued a permit for reconstruction of the runway (Runway 2) at Moscow Domodedovo Airport. According to the plan of the Federal Targeted Investment Program, determining the terms and conditions of financing of the project, in 2016 the air hub will put into operation a new runway.

The Runway-2 Reconstruction Project provides for performing works which will not reduce the throughput capacity of the airfield. So, first a new runway at a distance of 287.5 meters from the existing runway-2 and the necessary taxiways will be built. Only after commissioning and putting into operation of the new runway, the old one will be closed for renovation and further refitting of the facility into the main taxiway.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport is the only airport in the Moscow aviation hub and in Russia in general operating two independent runways, which allows taking off and landing of aircrafts using both runways at the same time. This makes it possible to maintain a high throughput capacity of the airfield.

The forthcoming reconstruction of the runway will enhance infrastructure capabilities of the Domodedovo aerodrome complex: it will allow receiving all types of modern aircrafts without limitations using both runways, to minimize the runway occupancy time, and to reduce the level of impact of weather conditions during the flights.

Currently, the airfield reconstruction project is at the stage of preparatory works, which are scheduled to be completed in September 2014. At the same time, as part of a stand-alone project - Reconstruction of the Second Flight Zone of Moscow Domodedovo Airport, the contractor has started the apron area resurfacing, which will be implemented taking into account the phased commissioning of the renewed areas. This will minimize the impact of these works on the airport processes. As a result, the project will improve the quality of the apron-related services at Moscow Domodedovo Airport.

It should be noted that all construction projects implemented at Moscow Domodedovo Airport are aimed at creating the most comfortable conditions for travelers: increasing mobility of citizens of the country is one of the priorities in the field of air transportation.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport is the largest air hub in Russia, and in 2013, its total passenger traffic amounted 30.76 million people. It is the best airport in Russia and the CIS as rated by Skytrax. Domodedovo is the base airport in Moscow for member airlines of the largest global airline alliances - Star Alliance and oneworld.
