OREANDA-NEWS. August 21, 2014. With the world's largest UHV DC transmission capacity, East Shore of Xiluodu-Zhejiang Jinhua ±800kV UHV DC transmission project was officially put into operation, which meant the operation of another clean energy channel linking the southwestern hydropower base and the eastern load center.

This project is SGCC's fourth UHV DC transmission project with independent R&D, design and construction, following the success of those between Xiangjiaba and Shanghai, Jinping and Sunan, and South Hami and Zhengzhou. This project starts at Sichuan Yibin Convertor Station and ends at Zhejiang Jinhua Convertor Station, via 5 provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi and Zhejiang with a total length of 1,653km (including a 2.718km-span over the Xiangjiang River and a 2.446km-span over the Ganjiang River). Upon its completion, it will annually transport 40TWh of clean hydropower to Zhejiang, which is equivalent to savings of 12.28 million tons of standard coal and an emission reduction of over 34 million tons of carbon dioxide.

This project vigorously helps transform the energy advantage in the West into economic advantage and relieve the power and environment pressure in East China, and it has a significant influence on China's Western Development and energy security and will play a critical role in stabilizing growth, adjusting the structure and benefiting the people.

The project has realized the trial operation of single circuit with 8GW full-load and 8.4GW over-load for the first time in the world, and created a new record of ultra-large capacity of DC transmission. As an important innovative project comprehensively applying general design and general equipment, it further consolidates and expands China's leading advantage in the field of UHV transmission technology and secures the new record high in world power transmission technology. Currently, UHV development is embracing its new opportunity. SGCC's Four AC and Four DC UHV Projects have been listed into the Action Plan for Air Pollution Prevention and Control, marking the coming of a new phase for the comprehensive large-scale construction of UHV grid. SGCC will further accelerate the construction of Four AC and Four DC UHV Projects and Five AC and Five DC UHV Projects, and strive to provide safer, cheaper, cleaner and sustainable power supply for economic and social development.

It is known that East Shore of Xiluodu-Zhejiang Jinhua Project has realized the independent research and development, design and construction of high-end converter transformer and successfully put it into operation for the first time in China, which means a new breakthrough in localization; it has successfully overcome a series of core technical difficulties such as the application of UHV DC large-capacity transmission equipment for 5000a rated current and the construction of lines in heavy ice area, and achieved rich technological innovation results. After commissioning, the system successfully had a live operation at the first attempt and kept operating steadily with large load.
