Incheon Airport, Breaking Down Korea’s Language Barrier
OREANDA-NEWS. August 20, 2014. Incheon International Airport Corporation held a BBB-Day campaign at Incheon Airport on the 23th in collaboration with BBB Korea. Celebrating its fifth year, the campaign was launched to promote the BBB service, a language and culture interpretation service provided over the phone by Incheon Airport and BBB Korea to resolve language problems that Koreans and foreigners visiting Korea may face.
* BBB (Before Babel Brigade) is a group of volunteers who share a common vision of a society free from cultural and language barriers like the ideal time before the construction of the Babel Tower when people shared a common language.
Events that were held included an introduction of BBB through a game on the large touch screen in the Millennium Hall (first floor of the Passenger Terminal) and a demonstration of breaking tiles by the taekwondo team as a symbol of breaking down the cultural and language barriers.
The BBB service is a volunteer service in which interpreters who are fluent in foreign languages use their mobile phones to donate their talent. Since signing an agreement with BBB Korea in 2009, Incheon Airport has been a strong supporter of the BBB service as a social contribution where, under the slogan, “Incheon Airport without language barriers”, Incheon Airport passengers participate as volunteers and donate their talents. About 300 of the outstanding BBB foreign language volunteers are currently working as special volunteers for Incheon Airport.
Volunteers provide services in 19 different languages, and any Korean or foreigner experiencing language difficulties at the airport can use the service for free. Call 1588-5644 or use the BBB app to make a call and select the required language to be connected to the mobile phone of a volunteer.
