Passenger Level Up 6,5% at LAX in 1H
OREANDA-NEWS. August 13, 2014. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) officials reported that total passengers during the first six months of 2014 rose 6.5 percent to 34,336,315 passengers from 32,217,517 during the same period last year. While there was a 5.6 percent growth in domestic passengers to 25,062,714 from 23,715,708 last year, international traffic grew nine percent to 9,273,601 passengers from 8,501,809 in 2014.
Air cargo tonnage levels stayed about the same with 951,772 during the first six months of this year compared to 950,783 during the same period last year. Air mail tonnage decreased 1.3 percent to 35,613 tons from 36,115 tons in 2013. Freight is slightly up 0.16 percent to 916,159 tons this year from 914,668 tons in 2013.
Airport officials attribute the passenger increase to the economy’s continuing improvement and to additional service on existing international routes by several U.S. and foreign air carriers, including Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong, Transaero and Aeroflot to Moscow, Korean Air to Seoul, and American Airlines to Sao Paulo. In addition, service was introduced by Etihad Airways to Abu Dhabi; SAUDIA to Jeddah-Riyadh; and Norwegian Air to London/Gatwick, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo.
For the month of June, domestic traffic at LAX rose 5.7 percent to 4,765,839 passengers from 4,507,505 passengers in June 2013. International traffic increased 9.4 percent to 1,758,564 passengers from 1,607,009 passengers in June 2013. According to airport officials, June was the tenth month in a row of increasing passenger volume.
