OREANDA-NEWS. The new Airbus A350 XWB is landing in Sydney, the first Australian destination for the revolutionary aircraft.

“Sydney Airport continues to be a hub for new generation, quieter aircraft and we're delighted to be the first Australian airport to welcome the A350,” Sydney Airport chief executive officer Kerrie Mather said.

“The A350 family features a fuselage comprising more than 50 per cent composite materials which means it is lighter, requires less fuel to operate and is more efficient to maintain.

“It has a longer range than existing models of its type, capable of flying up 8,500 nautical miles - which would allow non-stop services from Sydney to many more destinations, including many US cities and virtually all of South America. It will also be able to carry up to 400 passengers, depending on seat configuration which will open up new routes and destinations for airlines.

“This is the penultimate proving flight for the A350 XWB, which is expected to go into commercial service later this year.

“The A350 borrows many systems from the A380, which has been highly popular with travellers all around the world.

“Sydney Airport hosted the world's first commercial service of the A380 in 2007. Since then, we've continued to welcome many new generation aircraft including the A350 today.”

The aircraft is landing at 6am this morning and will host industry and media tours before departing for Auckland at 2pm.

The best vantage point for members of the public wanting to view the aircraft will be on Ross Smith Avenue near General Holmes Drive.
