OREANDA-NEWS. July 09, 2014. Incheon International Airport became the first airport in Korea to obtain the ISO 50001 energy management system certification, which was awarded to Incheon Airport by KEMCO GHG Certification Office.

ISO 50001 is an international standard created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to promote the planning, implementation and operation of an energy management system by an organization. It is a management system that helps establish a comprehensive and systematic business strategy for activities to enhance energy efficiency and continuously promotes this strategy in every aspect of the organization.

On October 2010, Incheon International Airport Corporation began its participation as a demonstration company in the Energy Management System Certification Project led by Korea Energy Management Corporation (KEMCO). In February 2012, Incheon Airport became the first airport in the world to obtain the ISO 50001 demonstration certification in the buildings category, after which it recently obtained the official full certification.

During the construction of Incheon Airport and the early stages of its operations, Incheon International Airport Corporation established a management system that actively reduces environmental risk factors and improves the environment, thanks to which Incheon Airport obtained the ISO 14001 environmental management system certification a little over one year since its opening. Also, last March, Incheon Airport became the first in Korea to be certified at level 3 Optimization of Airport Carbon Accreditation, which is used by the Airports Council International (ACI) to assess an airport’s capability to manage and reduce carbon emissions. Level 3 is the world’s highest level that a medium and large size airport can obtain. With the recent ISO 50001 EMS certification, Incheon Airport now holds the global top three environmental certifications.
