Uralhimmash Delivers Casks for Spent Nuclear Fuel to Beloyarsk NPP
OREANDA-NEWS. Uralhimmash shop №40 produced and delivered four sets of TUK-84/1 shipping casks to Beloyarsk NPP located in Zarechny. Special TK-84 freight wagons were used to transport the equipment.
Two complimentary internal steel shells were delivered to the customer by road.
Shipping casks are used to transport and store spent nuclear fuel. The cask is a hermetically sealed container made of silicomanganese steel and covered with anti-corrosion coating on both sides. The container is a receptacle for a hermetic internal shell made of stainless steel. The shell stores a basket with spent nuclear fuel.
The container and shell together provide double encapsulation of internal space of the shell and protection of its contents against mechanical and heat damage in normal and emergency conditions. They also screen ionizing radiation, reducing the emission to safe level for working personnel and environment and providing biological protection.
Each of the produced sets has weight of nearly 90 tonnes and wall thickness of 190-220 mm. The materials used in production allow the cask to be used in thermal conditions of down to -50°C.
Uralhimmash began development of shipping casks in partnership with Russian Federal Nuclear Center and Beloyask NPP in 2003. The same year the enterprise obtained a patent for production of spent nuclear fuel shipping casks. Uralhimmash is the only enterprise both in Russia and world to use this production technology.
OJSC Uralhimmash manufactures equipment for petrochemical and oil and gas processing industries, the chemical industry, iron & steel and non-ferrous metallurgy, companies in conventional and nuclear energy generation sectors and for the construction industry.
