Officials: Moldova Not Hit by Cut-Off in Gas Supplies to Ukraine
OREANDA-NEWS. June 24, 2014. Moldova has not been affected by the cut-off in Russian gas supplies to Ukraine, as the transit was not interrupted, Deputy Economics Minister Tudor Copaci has told MOLDPRES.
“We take over the gas from the transit pipeline, the consumers receive the needed gas quantities,” Copaci said. He added that “as long as the transit to the European Union countries is not affected, we are not hit, we take over the respective volumes.”.
Economics Ministry specialists monitor the situation, in order to see how the things will develop. Obviously, we are working on alternative variants too, Copaci stressed.
The Moldovagaz stock company issued a press release, saying that “presently, the supply of gas to all Moldova’s consumers is continuous, and the country’s distribution and transport systems work as normal.”.
Russia cut off the gas supply to Ukraine and introduced the upfront payment regime, after Kiev had failed to pay his almost two-billion-dollar debt to Gazprom. The Russian giant said it would continue supplying all the contracted quantity of gas to the European consumers and asked the Ukrainian Company Naftogaz to ensure the transit across Ukraine.
