OREANDA-NEWS. May 27, 2014. Southwest Airlines announced it will add six new daily nonstop flights between Midway International Airport and Dallas Love Field beginning October 13, 2014. Southwest's expansion of service to Dallas Love Field comes with the expiration of the Wright Amendment, which had previously limited operations at the airport.

"I want to thank Southwest Airlines for adding service from Chicago to Dallas Love Field and for continuing to grow service at its busiest market, Midway International Airport," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "Chicago is the best connected city in the world, with two first-class airports that can get you almost anywhere with a single flight. As we continue to add new destinations and strengthen our connectivity to markets around the globe, we are well on our way to meet our goal of 55 million visitors to Chicago by 2020."

"Chicago is an integral part of our network and the new service will provide a direct link between two of the most important centers of business in the United States," said Andrew Waterson, Southwest Airlines Vice President of Network Planning and Performance. "In addition to the new routes, our Customers will be able reach destinations beyond the nation's borders for the first time in Southwest Airlines 43-year history."

Dallas Love Field is owned and operated by the City of Dallas. The airfield is located seven miles northwest of the downtown central business district.

"The expansion of service to Dallas Love Field is great news for Chicago and our airports. Southwest Airlines is an outstanding partner to the Chicago Department of Aviation and Midway International Airport," said Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie S. Andolino. "Midway continues to serve as the nation's premier airport for value fare, point-to-point service thanks to the continued commitment and investment in the airport from Southwest."

Midway currently provides service to 74 destinations with approximately 575 daily flights in and out of the airport. In 2014, Midway will add six new markets: Boise, Dallas-Love Field, Harrisburg, Knoxville, Portland, and Washington-Reagan. In 2013, Midway recorded its highest passenger total in the airport's 86-year history with more than 20.5 million passengers.

This fall, Southwest Airlines will also convert service on international routes currently served by AirTran from Chicago Midway to the carrier's distinctive Brand and Boeing 737s. Beginning November 2, 2014, the airline will offer service to Cancun*, Montego Bay, and Punta Cana* (*pending government approval).
