OREANDA-NEWS. May 26, 2014. Local governments cannot agree on the location of the Rail Baltic track in Harju County, and the government should step in, says county governor Ulle Rajasalu.

Speaking on ERR radio today, Rajasalu said heated debates over the location of the high-speed rail track began when there were two alternative routes, and now there are 11.

She said the vast majority of the population backs the rail link, but when the topic concerns people's land, then they are automatically opposed.

Her pick would be to utilize the Tallinn-Viljandi line, but Tallinn's authorities are against that possibility as then the Rail Baltic track would have to go through Tallinn's central areas.

A new Planning Act would be one solution, Rajasalu said, if it gave the government powers to decide the Rail Baltic route.
