OREANDA-NEWS. May 15, 2014. The accuracy of Incheon Airport Baggage Handling System (BHS) has proved to be up to 20 times better than that of airports in Europe and the U.S.

BHS accuracy is assessed by the number of baggage items not loaded onto the aircraft per 100,000. According to the 2014 Baggage Report recently published by SITA, the numbers of airports in Europe and the U.S. (Domestic flights) were 19 and 6 on average, respectively. However, Incheon Airport was 1, showing an error rate of 0.001%, that is, world-class accuracy.

The Baggage Report annually published by SITA, the multinational IT company providing the aviation field with IT and communication services, is widely recognized enough to be used as a main criterion by IATA.

This performance is attributed largely to a comprehensive system improvement including BHS operation and maintenance, and to the high-quality check-in and ground handling services of airlines and cooperative firms. Thorough preventive inspection and maintenance of facilities, regular training, and 35 emergency drills per year using various error scenarios along with the implementation of comprehensive stabilization plans based on error trend analysis also contributed to such a great achievement.

In particular, Incheon Airport developed and implemented a transfer baggage peak forecast system for the first time in the world to smoothly handle baggage by placing personnel for ground service and maintenance flexibly by time through three stage-based forecasts (Green, Yellow, and Red) according to transfer baggage concentration.
