OREANDA-NEWS. Fujitsu Limited has announced an agreement with NTT DOCOMO that will deepen their relationship through R&D collaboration on fifth generation (5G) mobile communications systems and cooperation on 5G experimental trials. Under this agreement, Fujitsu Limited, along with Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., will work with DOCOMO to conduct experimental trials in stages, and, while promoting development of 5G technology, will actively undertake efforts on 5G standardization initiatives that are set to begin in 2016.

As a new mobile communications technology, 5G is under review for service rollout around 2020. International R&D efforts are now proceeding with the goal of realizing a 5G technology able to keep pace with the explosive growth in mobile communications traffic by offering capacity over 1,000 times greater than currently available and realizing data communications speeds that exceed 10-Gbps. The 5G technology should also be able to support the increasing number of devices associated with the spread of sensor networks and other machine-to-machine communications.

Under the agreement, Fujitsu will cooperate with DOCOMO to develop technology and conduct experimental trials that cover "increasing capacity per area using small cells deployed in high density with remote radio connection." The experimental trials are set to commence during 2014, and plan to verify that a coordinated radio resource scheduling algorithm for very densely deployed base stations using remote radio head (RRH), will increase 5G capacity per area. Along with promoting the development of 5G-related technologies, Fujitsu will actively work on 5G standardization initiatives that are set to begin in 2016.

Fujitsu played an active role in standardizing 3GPP in the LTE standards process, and also contributed to the LTE-Advanced standards process. Fujitsu has already developed high-quality, high-performance wireless base-station systems that include some of the world's most efficient amplifiers, which the company has provided to DOCOMO for its LTE service since December 2010. Fujitsu is currently developing "high-density wireless base stations" to support the LTE-Advanced protocol, an advancement over LTE.
