MC-21-300 Aircraft with PD-14 Engines Passed Mockup Stage
OREANDA-NEWS. From March 24 to March 25, 2014 a working visit of Aviadvigatel's specialists to OJSC "Irkut Corporation" took place, where they took part in the mockup committee work to certify MC-21-300 aircraft.
The mockup committee on MC-21-300 aircraft with PD-14 engine consisted of specialists from Aviation Register of Interstate Aviation Committee (AR IAC), certification centres and Irkut Corporation. The work of the mockup committee was managed by Alexander Bozhkov, the head of engines and propellers division of AR IAC.
It's the first time when the engine-building design bureau designs not only the engine, but also individual aircraft components — air intake, nacelle fairings and cowls. In such event the volume of works to be done by design bureau specialists for the certification of an aircraft with new engines is extended.
The mockup committee established the list of engineering designs, rig, ground and flight tests on the engine, to be carried out by OJSC "Aviadvigatel" within the certification of MC-21-300 aircraft with PD-14 engine. The time schedule is approved by Irkut Corporation. Works on PD-14 engine integration with MC-21-300 aircraft have started. The aircraft certification will be finished in 2018, the new engine certification — one year earlier, in 2017.
Mockup stage within the PD-14 engine certification was passed by OJSC "Aviadvigatel" in 2013. The members of the mockup committee confirmed that the engine development is carried out with due consideration of all the airworthiness requirements of Aviation rules AP-33, AP-34, to the greatest possible extent harmonized with US and Europe rules; the list of certification works and tests allows to prove the engine's conformity with airworthiness and environment protection requirements. To date there are three PD-14 engines manufactured, two of them being tested at the company's test bench. The manufacturing of four more engines of the test batch started for engineering development and certification works.
In the early 2014 the application was submitted to European Aviation Safety Agency — EASA — for validation of the PD-14 engine type certificate to confirm its conformity with EU airworthiness regulations. The recognition of AR IAC Certificate by the European Aviation Safety Agency will allow to expand the PD-14 engine sales market significantly.
In November 2013 at the meeting on aero engines building development the President Vladimir Putin called the development of MC-21 passenger aircraft one of the key priorities of Russian civil aviation industry. "I'm aware that the demonstration engine for this aircraft (MC-21) is ready, being tested. It's important not to drag out its certification in order to start serial production in the scheduled time" — he noted.
