Estonian Economy Minister Calls for More Social Housing
OREANDA-NEWS. April 21, 2014. Economy Minister Urve Palo says the state should bring more social housing to the market as one solution to depreciating Soviet-era housing stock.
Elsewhere in the world, Palo said, "municipally provided apartments are for people who are under 30 years old and don't want to take out a 30-year mortgage. Or simply for people with a lower income," Palo told Postimees.
"Tallinn has a certain number of municipal apartments, but they are mainly meant for the less well-off and people who have been less fortunate in life. We should put our heads together as to what the state could do with local governments and private sector to reach the 21st century."
She said that if a recession should take place and the construction sector suffers as a result, this area could be a place for a government stimulus.
