CLP Power Comments Government Document on Fuel Mix for Electricity
OREANDA-NEWS. March 25, 2014. In response to the Consultation Document on Future Fuel Mix for Electricity Generation issued by the Government, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (“CLP Power”) has the following preliminary views:
We welcome Government’s approach in looking ahead to key energy decisions that must be taken to improve the environment for the well-being of future generations. We will study the consultation document carefully.
The future choice of fuels will be driven by a range of factors, which will change over time. The ability to pursue a combination of options and enabling flexibility for the long term to obtain the most reliable and economic energy mix will provide the best protection for our customers.
The current fuel mix of coal, nuclear and gas has been serving Hong Kong well in achieving the policy objectives of reliable electricity supply, environmental consideration and competitive cost. The consequences and impacts of all fuel mix options need to be fully evaluated and accounted for, before reaching a robust and sustainable decision that balances the policy objectives.
As an international city, Hong Kong depends on a very high level of supply reliability, which it has developed in a self-reliant way over many years. It will be important to make sure that consumers understand the impact on supply reliability and cost implications of the options put forward for the fuel mix.
We will provide the public with relevant information about the options to facilitate discussions and submissions. We will submit our response to the consultation at a later stage.
CLP will continue to work hard to support the implementation of the preferred outcome of fuel mix determined by Government and the community in the consultation, on behalf of our customers and Hong Kong as a whole.
