OREANDA-NEWS. March 24, 2014. The Cabinet approved the signing of the relevant agreement. Earlier, Agriculture Minister of Moldova Vasile Bumacov said the signing of the agreement would help consolidate relations between Moldova and this powerful institution, intensify their interaction under FAO assistance and support programs and programs of other international organizations.

Opening the FAO office will favour extension of the FAO activity in Moldova and enhancement of the cooperation between the government of Moldova and FAO in agriculture and rural development. The opening is expected to facilitate information and advisory efforts of FAO, promotion and modernization of the agricultural sector of Moldova and implementation of technical support programs, etc.

The representative office of FAO in Moldova is to be located in the Ministry of Agriculture of Moldova in premises of a floor space of 60 sq m. The staff members will be selected in the Ministry. Currently, FAO is implementing 5 programs in Moldova to enlarge possibilities of removing dangerous chemicals from its territory, to increase its seed stock, to render assistance in holding the general agricultural census in Moldova, to simplify programs for technical cooperation and the program on information systems for better decision-making in the food safety domain.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was established in 1945 to defeat hunger and poverty by developing agriculture, improving nutrition and achieving food security. Moldova joined FAO in 1995.
