OREANDA-NEWS. NPO Saturn presented full-scale mock-ups of its industrial turbine engines GTE-4RM and E-70/8RD as part of the integrated United Engine Corporation's exhibition booth at the XII International “Russia Power - 2014” exposition held in Moscow on 4-6 March 2014.

One of NPO Saturn's activities is the design and development of gas turbine engines for industrial and marine applications in the power range of 2.5 - 10 MW. The main features of the integrated exhibition booth during the Russia Power - 2014 expo were the industrial turbine applications designed specifically by NPO Saturn.

According to Pavel Fetisov, NPO Saturn deputy CEO for industrial and marine GTE programs, “the company has its niche categories in the Gazprom-controlled market: these are the GTE-4RM engines used for underground gas storage rooms. Over the next 2-3 years Gazprom will need from 20 to 25 such gas turbine engines to be used for the underground gas storage, and our customer plans to actively develop that field of activity.”

As a reminder, the first GTE-4RM was put into operation back in 2004 at the Kasimov underground gas storage site. At the moment the company is working on the production of the 38th, 39th and 40th engines.

NPO Saturn carries out after-market support on all of its customer-delivered products throughout the entire life cycle. In parallel NPO Saturn is constantly working on enhancing the characteristics of its engines upgrading their in-service performance and increasing their reliability level.

During the exhibition, the specialists of NPO Saturn conducted a number of meetings and talks with the representatives of their customers' companies operating their industrial gas turbine engines as part of their power plants; the parties discussed about the current operation of the engines at the customer sites as well as the engine maintenance and overhaul schedules. For instance, for the DO49R engines, NPO Saturn plans to increase the engine life from 25 thousand hours to 30 thousand hours. There are approximately 30 DO49R engines operated at different customers' sites. They have demonstrated excellent in-service operability, which unquestionably attracts new customers.

NPO Saturn is also steadily developing its marine engine program. In view of recent growth in volume of civil and military ship building and the growing interest of oil and gas companies to order new ships and the seashore area infrastructure shelf-prospecting equipment, NPO Saturn is offering to the market a dual-fuel/single-fuel marine gas turbine engine E70/8RD for marine application.

A mock-up of the “marine and seashore area engine” was presented at the Russia Power - 2014 expo. Many exhibition booth visitors showed a lot of interest in that engine asking various questions to the NPO Saturn team working at the exhibition.

“In general, there are quite a few interesting ways to proceed when it comes to marine applications, which we will continue developing further on, - shared Pavel Fetisov. - Among other items on the agenda is the potential involvement of NPO Saturn in supply of gas turbine engines and their derivatives to be installed on new Navy ships and participation of Saturn in the upgrade of the existing Navy fleet.”

The NPO Saturn Research and Production Association (OJSC) is an engine-building company specialized in the design and development, production and after-market support of gas turbine engines for military and civil aviation, naval ships and power-generating plants and gas-pumping units.
